Define the role of government in public policy Research Paper

Characterize the job of government in open approach - Research Paper Example ich it can never be for the enthusiasm of any individual, or modest number of people, to raise and keep up; on the grounds that benefit would never reimburse the cost to any individual or modest number of people, however it might oftentimes do substantially more than reimburse it to an incredible society.† Adam Smith’s explanation can be deciphered to imply that the job of government is in the zone of barrier, organization of equity, open works, and in building and keeping up foundations in the open intrigue. It is anything but difficult to decipher the initial three: government’s job is in safeguard, equity, and out in the open works. Be that as it may, the fourth can have a few translations. Regardless, a lot of financial aspects has kept up that market is undeniably more productive than government in distributing private merchandise and ventures - gave that the merchandise or administrations have no externalities or extra advantages or mischief (Rosen, 1995, pp. 61-89). Various channels have various qualities and shortcomings. decoding†¦Just as effective encoding is an ability, so is fruitful interpreting similarly as disarrays can emerge from mistakes in encoding, it can likewise emerge from translating blunders. This is especially the situation if the decoder needs more information to comprehend the message. receiver†¦ your message is conveyed to singular individuals from your crowd. My preferred business will be Business management.I picked this since I need to claim my own business and work for myself. The three moral issues that I feel that supervisors are looking in this industry is 1. Segregation 2. Extortion 3. Authority. 1. Segregation is a significant issue in a ton of organizations today. A few organizations oppress race, sex/sex, and regularly now sexual inclination. There is a spot in my town that really won't recruit anybody however Mexicans since they are sa id they work more earnestly than any other individual. Sure they have a couple of blacks and whites there. My purported in-law is a manager there and let me know before I put in my application that they are not going to employ me since they need more Mexicans. It's insane yet obvious and it's not reasonable. I am a diligent employee and I shouldn't be precluded work on the grounds that from claiming my race. 2. Extortion is another issue and a ton of are liable of it. Workers and supervisors are liable of it just to get a higher position or simply employed. Some lie about training and work history. We lie in light of the fact that most organizations don't check everything on the application. In the event that everything was checked, at that point it would be a great deal of pitiful jobless people.Lying about training, work history and capability is in each organization. This â€Å"person† I realize found a site to get phony GEDs and she is utilizing hers. She been with the org anization for a long time. In the event that they are not going to check all data on applications, at that point they are lying themselves. They state they go over applications and they don't. 3. Authority is the greatest issue to me by and by. I have worked for my in-law around 10 years back (before the mexican issue) and she mishandled her position. She felt that since she was in a higher position she would utilize it and make us (laborers) so a portion of her work. She would pull a few of us off our machines to do stock. We did it for some time until the plant had an organization meeting. We were determined what our occupations were and inquired as to why were doing different things that kept our creation low. Nobody made some noise until I did. Some dreaded they would lose their positions yet not ME. I told on her and she was so they began causing her to do stock and record it on paper. She was distraught at me and I couldn't have cared less in light of the fact that she was not some tea in any case. We as a whole got a $1 raise since we had carried out our responsibility and part of hers too. A Person Studying Persons

A Person Studying Persons… This post began with my long-standing hatred of Myers-Briggs tests (especially as they appear in the Tumblr studyblr community). I had long ago lodged “MBTI” (the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) into a closet in my head for things I don’t pay attention to, until I recently talked to a few friends who all told me that over the summer they’d been going through periods of introspection, helped in part by taking a Myers-Briggs personality test. Knowing them to be brilliant, hard-working MIT students, I thought to reconsider my initial hatred of the MBTI. Could there be any merit to it? I spent some time doing some thinking and was talking to my significant other, Javier W., who’s currently a researcher at an MIT lab. I learned through him that even there, where peer-reviewed research reigns supreme, grad students and researchers would casually share their Myers-Briggs types (though, he did stress that this was really just for fun). Curious, I then took a Myers-Briggs test myself, researched the “science” behind it (tl;dr: there is none) and was inspired to take and research a few other tests besides. Debunking Myers-Briggs My result for taking the MBTI was “ESFJ”. I am apparently “The Consul” (according to 16personalities.com). Here is an excerpt from a description of my “personality”, which I vehemently disagreed with: In high school, ESFJs are the cheerleaders and the quarterbacks, setting the tone, taking the spotlightlater in life, ESFJs continue to enjoy supporting their friends and loved ones, organizing social gatherings and doing their best to make sure everyone is happy. Discussing scientific theories or debating European politics isn’t likely to capture ESFJs’ interest for too long. ESFJs are more concerned with fashion and their appearance, their social status and the standings of other people. Practical matters and gossip are their bread and butter Ask anyone I know, especially in high school, and this is probably the complete opposite of me as a person. First, no, I wasn’t popular in high school. I was mostly busy studying; I would make excuses to not hang out with people; I was a stereotypical nerd. Second, all I do every single day is discuss scientific theories, listen to the NPR Politics Podcast, and freak out over Brexit. The only grain of similarity I could get from this was that I definitely enjoy making others happy, whether through teaching, organizing events, or just listening to a friend on a hard day. I would say that, compared to most people I know, I’m more likely to go out of my way to perform these types of kindnesses. This is not necessarily all good, as it has also led to “unable to say no” sorts of situations, but I think I’ve gotten better at that. Then, I researched the “theory” behind MBTI. Fellow blogger Erick P. ‘17 kindly sent me this youtube video, which just about sums it up: In short, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator was created by two women, Isabel Myers and Katharine Briggs, based on personality theories by Carl Jung. Science in Jung’s time (the 1920’s) was not very rigorous or methodical, so Jung literally just made up his theories based on his own experience. Myers and Briggs, who created the MBTI based on his made-up theories, were just two writers, with zero psychology training. This article  does a good job of digging further into the details of how faulty the actual methods are. So, the Myers-Briggs test is, in fact, not scientific at all. Even disregarding its origins and looking at the test itself, Myers-Briggs is terrible for what it aims to really do. Primarily, it ignores that people can like or be more than one thing for most traits. Anyone can, in theory, like “fashion or their appearance”, and also like “discussing scientific theories or debating European politics”. I can be very social and still enjoy building stuff by myself in a lab all day. MBTI puts these qualities on a spectrum (such as “thinking vs. feeling”), when actually, they’re just completely independent variables. Furthermore, even if these traits were not independent, it’s incorrect to assume that someone who is 51% “thinking” is much more of a thinker than someone who is 49% “thinking” with such a short questionnaire. Most people are in the middle of the bell curve for most “traits”, and so most people are actually in-between, and quite versatileeven data collected from the test itself shows this. BEWARE OF FAKE NEWS SCIENCE! There’s nothing inherently wrong with a fun test, especially if it simply becomes a replacement for “so what’s your sign?” for neuroscientists, or provokes a little introspection. But the danger of MBTI is that it is, unfortunately, actually used in some professional contexts. There is a company that owns and monetizes this test and makes $20 million a year, in part by selling products that help HR departments manage people. I definitely would never want someone assigning my roles or deciding whether to hire me based on supposedly being an “ESFJ”. This is where the Myers-Briggs test gets dangerous in its influence, and why I felt the need to publicly debunk its “science”. So then what? If the Myers Briggs test is fake science and not a good personality test, then what can you use to self-evaluate, if anything? After a lot more puttering around the internet, I came to the conclusion that virtually all personality tests are far from perfect, and, more obviously, that there is still a missing bridge between neuroscience and psychology. The relationship between physical anatomy, environmental factors, and behavior is still very unknown and difficult to understand. Five Factor Model A more rigorously reviewed personality test, the “Big 5” personality test, is supposed to be better science, although it’s definitely far from perfect. This “five factor model” was developed by several independent sets of researchers. Since this is a more obscure test, I’ll explain the model. According to the Big 5 or Five Factor Model, there are five aspects of personality that exist on a spectrum: Openness to experience, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism. The acronym “OCEAN” is often used for the five traits. These traits were derived based on factor analysis (a statistical method) of personality datathese 5 traits emerged out of the statistical analysis of that data. I took the Big 5 test (I like this one, they’re all the same test but this web interface is more user-friendly) and my results were the following: Openness- high (95%) Conscientiousness high (98%) Extraverted high (80%) Agreeableness high (100%) Neuroticism moderate (43%) By the Big 5 model, I’m supposedly more open, more conscientiousness, more extroverted, and much more agreeable than most people. I’m about average in neuroticismin other words, I don’t overreact but I’m also not particularly calm in times of stress, similar to most people. This did feel like a more accurate description of myself, but at the same time, it’s also much more general. I personally find that appealing; I feel like the more mild guidance evokes real introspection. You have to think about how these “traits” map to your life and how you act, and even whether you should try to change some behaviors. I prefer that a lot more to other people (or pre-written descriptions) telling me about myself. As for the science, there are still a lot of critiques on the Big 5 or five-factor model. One that is quite similar to issues with MBTI is again ignoring humans’ multifaceted nature, especially with regard to extraversion. Here is a more in-depth critique, which also discusses how Big 5 can be too shallow: by being a data-only approach, it can ignore other tested theories of human behavior. Big 5 provides some information, but it is definitely not the whole picture. All of that said, the Big 5 test, unlike Myers-Briggs, is more open about being flawed and more transparent about its methods, as real science is supposed to be. It was also created from an actual statistical analysis of actual data, compared to Myers, Briggs, and Jung making stuff up. If anything, what I learned from the Big 5 test is that psychology is difficult, and as Chris Peterson said to me, “it’s a lot of people trying to create a useful model of a hard thing”. The Zodiac Since MBTI is comparable (in terms of accuracy) to horoscopes anyway, why not just look to horoscopes for guidance? If anything, horoscopes are actually less dangerous than the Myers-Briggs testat least companies do not look to them for management guidance. And they’re more fun! I have no idea how the heck they got two fish out of these dots connected with lines. Like what?? Western astrology is “based on a greek tradition, generally regarded as pseudoscientific and has consistently failed objective tests” (Wikipedia). Just like the Myers-Briggs test! Here’s a random astrology site I used, I have no idea what the actual Hellenistic teachings are or whatever so its validity (is that word even applicable now) is definitely questionable. In Western astrology I am a Pisces, which I found to actually describe me better than the MBTI’s “ESFJ” description. From the site above, Pisces are “never judgemental and always forgiving”, and selfless, “always willing to help others, without hoping to get anything back.” I feel like this pretty accurately describes me, except for Pisces having “artistic talent”. I mean, I enjoy visually pleasing things, and good music, but I never found myself to be that artistic. And I would not describe myself as timid (though to be fair, I was as a child). In Chinese astrology, I am the year of the rat. Which is super general, because it would imply that everyone else born between February 19th, 1996 and February 6th, 1997 is like me. Having gone through 12+ years of school with mostly these people, I could definitely disagree with that. As for the description itself, though, it’s kind of true too: ambitious and sociable. Even the stated health risks were kind of true, I have mild eczema and the Chinese zodiac said I would suffer from skin conditions! The point of all this Back to my friends, some people looking for some introspection and who found it via MBTI. Taking the test and considering the questions does, admittedly, force you to think about your daily behaviors, and I do think that being more introspective and taking time to understand yourself is great for personal development. The real issue with Myers-Briggs is how many people in positions of power regard it as “real science” when it is truly, literally about as accurate as a horoscope. I’m currently at home and was talking to a family member about writing this blog post. To my disbelief and surprise, even they had to take a Myers-Briggs test at their workplace! With this more deeply personal anecdote, I felt more motivated than ever to post this publiclyin the hope that just a few more people will realize that this is not a test to be used in any sort of professional evaluation of others. What I found while looking at more reputable personality tests and studies like Big 5 is that it’s hard to be a person studying personalitiespsychology, sociology, anthropology, and many other fields that study behavior are much harder to quantify, and the results tend to be murkier. Finally, I found that the issue with many of these “personality tests” is a human failure that I am intimately familiar with: the failure to accept that people can be more than one thing. I so strongly, instinctively resisted Myers-Briggs even before I knew more about it because I thought that if a ‘scientific’ personality test sounded like the people who ask me, “so, are you more Chinese or more Ethiopian?” it must be bullshit. But this all should empower more than disappoint you! Go forth and be whatever you want. There’s no right answer, and while that’s less convenient, it means the possibilities are endless! As Dumbledore says, “it is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.” And here is a fun, Hogwarts house-sorting personality test :) Post Tagged #Myers-Briggs tests

Rice University Admissions The SAT, ACT Scores, and GPA You Need to Get In

In 1917, when students from Texas AM kidnapped the Rice University owl mascot, the Rice student body pooled their resources and hired a private detective to find the missing mascotwho was safely returned home to its Owl family. If this sounds like a family youre interested in joining, look no further! In this post, we’ll take a look at Rice University admissions, the Rice Freshman Profile (including Rice University SAT and ACT scores), and more. Then once we get through the facts and figures, we can focus on how to get into Rice University, and what your best path to admission will look like. Applying to Rice? Whether youre from a Rice legacy family, or just got rerouted while googling Biryani recipes, there are a lot of solid reasons to be interested in attending Rice University. Here are some of the basics: Rice University is located on a 300-acre campus in Houston, Texas, and is generally considered to be the most selective school in the state. Undergraduates at Rice can select from over 50 majors and 25 minors, and the university offers its students the flexibility to pursue several multiple degree programs. If sports are your thing, Rice has teams competing in 14 NCAA Division I varsity sports, and offers intramural and club sports including jiu jitsu, water polo, and crew. According to the most recent Princeton Review rankings, Rice ranked as the number one university in the United States for quality of life and race/class interaction, and the second in terms of happiest students. If thats not a glowing review, I dont know what is! How to Get Into Rice University This year Rice received over 20,000 applications (for the incoming Class of 2023)so with a total student body of roughly 4,000 undergrads, and a matriculating freshman class of around 1,000, they have to be pretty darn selective. The Rice University admissions committee carefully sifts through those 20,000 undergrad applications each year to find the cream of the crop. And youre chances of being considered Cream will go up relative to the number of these bullet points you check off: Youre at or near the top of your high school class. You have extracurricular activities that demonstrate your leadership skills and social-mindedness. You have a unique background or point of view. Youre SAT/ACT scores are exceptional. You have a very high GPA. Obviously, not all of these factors are under your controlbut dont get discouraged! Several of them can bestarting with your test scores. Rice University SAT Scores Each year, Rice releases the demographic information of its incoming freshman class. While the Rice University admissions details of the Class of 2023 have not yet been made publicly available, the 2022 freshman profile still has a lot of relevant information about whos currently attending Rice and where they have been scoring. Here are the Rice University SAT scores of the Class of 2022: 25th Percentile75th Percentile Evidenced Based Reading Writing700760 Math750800 Obviously these are all high scores, but hopefully you can see that its not a one-size-fits-all situation when it comes to what SAT score the Rice admissions committee is looking for. Undergraduates have been admitted with a range of SAT scores, and your score alone is probably not going to make or break your application. However, its generally a good idea to aim for the 75th percentile of whatever school youre applying toin this case, youd want to set your goal score of 760 for Evidence-Based Reading Writing and 800 for Math.. Those are pretty high scores. Read up on stories of how to get the perfect SAT score and better get studying! Rice University ACT Scores If the ACT is more your cup of tea, weve got those statistics as well! 25th Percentile75th Percentile ACT Composite Score3335 ACT English3335 ACT Math3135 For students who submitted ACT scores and were admitted to Rice in 2017, the 75th percentile of the incoming freshman class scored a 35 on the ACT. Again, your best bet is to set your goal score around the 75th percentile, so try to aim for a 35 on both sections of the ACT, and definitely make sure not to go below a 33 in English and a 31 in Math. Our post on the perfect ACT score can help you get started! Rice University Average GPA Rice University is one of many that doesnt officially report the GPAs of its admitted studentsbut based on data reported from more than 1,000 schools, the average GPA of a freshman at Rice is 4.11. Rice doesnt set a minimum GPA for admission, nor do they re-weight GPA’s to any standard other than what a school provides. But dont worry, the Rice University admissions committee knows that grading practices vary dramatically from high school to high school, and theyll do their best to evaluate your scores fairlyno matter where youre from! If youre not sure what your GPA is, use this handy dandy GPA calculator to find out. Rice University Acceptance Rate The Rice University admissions rate for the Class of 2022 was 11%. This number was calculated by combining the Regular Decision applicants (10.3% admit rate) and Early Decision application (18% admit rate). But theres obviously more to it than thatso who are these people Well, lets find out Rice University Freshmen Profile (2018-2019) Here is a demographic breakdown of the students who were admitted to Rices current freshman class. Lets take a look: Rice 2022 Freshman Profile Total Applicants 20,923 Total Accepted2,328 Total Enrolled960 Admissions Rate11% Early Decision Admissions Rate18% Regular Decision Admissions Rate10.3% International Students13% Asian-American27% Caucasian36% African American10% Hispanic or Latino20% Multi-racial6% Female47% Male53% From Texas38% From Out-Of-State49% Rice FAQ: How else can you stand out? Weve looked at SAT and ACT scores, GPA, and the demographics of Rice Universitys current freshman classso you have some idea of how you stack up against the types of people who are attending Rice. Any grades youve already received may as well be set in stone, but there are also other things you have a bit more control over: letters of recommendation and admissions essays. When asking for letters of recommendation, pick a teacher that knows you well and write them a note explaining why you think you’d be a good fit for Rice. Most letters of rec are submitted online these days, but make sure to do your research firsttrust me, you don’t want to make Mrs. Jones shell out 49 cents for postage when she holds your academic fate in her hands like a tiny bird. Definitely become close to your teachers during your upperclassmen years, because generally those are the ones youll go to for recommendation letters. However, it doesnt hurt to form relationships with your teachers when youre a freshman, either. Regardless, show teachers that youre hard-working and willing to get help as needed. welcometohel (Class of 2018), AdmitSee As for admissions essays, this is your only real chance to convey your personality, so use it wisely. I was very protective (insecure) about my admissions essays, and I didnt let anyone read them. Dont do that. Definitely have a friend/parent/teacher give it a once-over before you send it in! Final Note Rice University may be competitive, but that shouldnt keep you from applying if you really want to go there. Transizions Ashley C. can give you some more info: Some students with an interest in Rice don’t apply because they’re intimidated by the numbers. Don’t let that stop you: The admissions team considers many other factors, including your enthusiasm for the opportunities and experiences Rice has to offer. When you apply to Rice, you’ll apply to one of the university’s six academic schools. This decision isn’t binding, but you will be asked to explain your selection. As you conduct your research, try to focus on a school of interest. Make sure you find specific information that you can discuss in your application. For instance, instead of lauding the â€Å"world-class professors,† talk about a particular professor whose class you would love to take or whose research inspires you. Instead of praising the large variety of extracurriculars, mention that you can’t wait to join the â€Å"Csters† club for women in computer science. Dig deep and find specifics that excite you. Think about what your journey at Rice would look like and how you would succeed there. Then write about it! Basically just do your best – it sounds corny, but if you’ve done everything you can, there’s nothing to regret, and thats really all you can hope for when you start getting those fat (or-not-so-fat) envelops back from colleges. With any luck, the Owl family will welcome you to Houston with open armsand with a hefty financial aid package! But, if not, remember that there are other amazing universities out there that would be lucky to have you! Best of luck on your college search journey! 🙂

Plato on the Parthenon Essay - 905 Words

Plato on the Parthenon The philosophical ideas of Plato that relate to the Parthenon include whether the structure is an element of the Visible World or the Intelligible World. In my opinion, Plato would view the Parthenon as an object in the Visible World. The Parthenon is a one of a kind monument that is tangible and exists in our real world. The Parthenon is an architectural project and deals with forms of science and mathematics. Plato?s view of compensation making The Parthenon ?less real? can be contradicted with the nature based models that were used to construct it. Plato?s view of Justice can be seen in his model of The Tripartite Soul. In this model Plato outlines 3 sectors of his ideal society. This theoretical society is composed of Guardians, Auxiliaries, and Producers. The Guardians were the upper class citizens who had the authority to pass judgment. Guardians were rational and wise, and could participate and become involved in politics. The Auxiliaries were positioned as courageous citizens who helped preserve the spirit and emotion of a society by ?protecting and serving? much like a modern day public works department or police and fire squad. In the lowest tier of Plato?s ideal society were the Producers, whose job it was to create. The Producers were to use temperance in their lives, for they were classified as appetitive souls who could easily succumb to bodily desires. The Producers were to practice asceticism, which is the eradication of bodily desires. Some critics do not agree that Franklin was such a noble man. They thought he might not have been telling his whole story, and that he was hiding a lot he had to offer. This paper will look at how one critic portrays Franklin--- Benjamin had no concern, really, for the immortal soul. He was too busy with the social man (292). This critic is D.H. Lawrence. In Lawrences piece he†¦show more content†¦At one point in his writings he says, â€Å"I admire him. I admire his sturdy courage first of all†¦I do not like him (293).† This is how a lot of critics and Americans have felt about Franklin. Yes, he might have helped us all out. Yes, he has made advancements for the good of the country. But was he out for making a buck? Lawrence then again in the next paragraph says, â€Å"Because, although I still believe that honesty is the best policy, I dislike policy†¦(293).† At this point in his piece, Lawrence is really reaching to disagree with everything Franklin says and stands for. The opinion of many might have been that Franklin as a harsh and cutthroat man, but isn’t that the way to get by in America? Is that why foreigners come to this great nation, the land of opportunity? In Franklin’s autobiography it says that he was a hard workingman. It said he would stay to all hours of the night to get things done. He would wake up in the morning and get to work early. This shows all his doubters that he really did care, and was really hard working. Who cares if he was selfish? Is that a crime? Well D.H. Lawrence, it’s not! Franklin carried himself with such dignity that he was proud of where he worked. Some nights he would cart a wheelbarrow full of papers home with him to work on deep into the night. Even if he might not have worked on those papers there, no one will ever know. Option Pricing Equity Portfolio Management

Question: Calculate the option price using Blacks formula. We are in June 27, 2011. A sugar producer has 1, 120, 000 pounds of sugar to sell in October. He wants to hedge the risk of a price fall between September and December. He hesitates between selling October futures and buying the put option described in question 2. We assume the margin requirement is 10% of notional (it is calculated once and for all at the inception of the position). The position is cleared on a monthly basis and the maintenance margin is the same as initial margin requirement (hence, a margin call is triggered every time the account balance falls below the initial level). Calculate the dynamics of the margin account balance and the margin calls between June and October 2011. Explain the possible problem for the sugar producer. Compare the final selling prices for the sugar producer in October 2011 if he does not hedge, if he hedges with futures contracts and if he hedges with a put option (we assume the final spot price in October is 24.84 cents per pound). Imagine again we are in June 27, 2011 but we dont know the final outcome in October. Calculate the minimal selling price secured when the producer buys the put. Plot the sugar selling price in terms of final Oct price (assumed unknown) within the 3 alternative strategies. Comment briefly on the pros and cons of the three strategies. Answer: According to (Collins and Fabozzi 1999, p.64), there are several assumptions that the Black Formula is based on. These include; The Black-Scholes model assumes European Options that can only be carried out at expiration. During the lifespan of an option, payments of dividends does not take place The Black-Scholes model makes the assumption that the markets are efficient and as such cannot be predicted by people easily. It uses the application of the random walk. The model also makes the assumption that there are no charges and any other transaction costs when purchasing and trading options and that there exists no barrier whatsoever to tradeoff. It assumes lognormal distribution that the underlying stock is normally distributed. The Black-Scholes model also makes the hypothesis that the interest rates are do no change and are known. It applies the risk-free rate to the known constant. It is also assumes that the volatility of the underlying stock which can be described as the measure of the expectations of near-future stock movements is known. The realism of this the assumptions in the real-life commodity markets. While some of the assumptions taken by the Black-Scholes model are reasonable and applicable in the real world scenarios like the lognormal distribution, others such as the risk free rates and known and constant interest rates do not apply in the real world markets. This is because rates are very likely to be affected by the volatility. Calculations N is the C.M.F of the standard normal distribution T-t is the time to maturity St is the spot value of the stock K is the strike worth of the underlying assets r is the rate not attached to any risk, usually in continues compounding terms is the volatility Replacing the figures on the formula with the values provided. =K e-r(T-t) St +C (St t) Risk free rate= 0.02 Spot price= 25.91 Strike price= 24.84 Time= 90 days Volatility=0.25 =24.84e-0.02(90)-25.91 +C (St t) C (St t) = N (d1) St -N (d2) K e r(T-t) Put price = 0.7458 3. Hedging for a price fall between September and December Time=6 X 30 = 180 days Put price =24.84e-0.02(180)-25.91 +C (St t) Put price = 0.0350 Possible problem: The new put price is too low for the sugar producer. While hedging for a price fall between September and December, the value of the put option is 0.0350. The final value of the put option by the end of October is highest if the sugar producer does not hedge. While hedging itself is the act of buying and retaining shares so as to reduce the risk on the portfolio, the put option price is highest at the end of November if the sugar producer does not hedge. The minimal price secured when the producer buys the put option is 24.0942. The advantages of hedging will include the fact they a hedged portfolio has lower risk than one that is not hedged. But I personally think that The Federal Government was right to let his visit. Why so did the Federal Government give credibleness and weight to a purveyor of hatred? How to Become a National Merit Semifinalist

How to Become a National Merit Semifinalist SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Every October, about 1.6 million juniors across the country take the PSAT. Those who score in the top 1% achieve the distinction of National Merit Semifinalist. Most of these students move on to become National Merit Finalists, with some winning scholarship money for college. Being named a National Merit Semifinalist is a huge achievement along the path to college. Let’s take a look at what you need to do to become a National Merit Semifinalist. Basic Entry Requirements forNational Merit Semifinalists To become a Semifinalist and be eligible for a National Merit Scholarship, you must meet the following four requirements set by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC): Be enrolled as a high school student, progressing normally toward graduation. This just means that you’re taking and passing a normal number of classes and expect to graduate on time. Plan to enroll full-time in college starting the fall following high school graduation. In other words, you can’t postpone college to spend a year abroad, work full-time, and so on. Be a U.S. citizen or lawful U.S. permanent resident planning to become a U.S. citizen. Earn a top PSAT score. The definition of a "top" score varies by state, but generally you'll need to score in the top 1% of juniors to qualify. But what PSAT score do you need exactly? Keep reading because in the next section we explain exactly how high your PSAT score needs to be to qualify you for Semifinalist status. To be eligible for National Merit, you must plan to start college in the fall after your high school graduation. National Merit SemifinalistQualifying Scores The NMSCuses its own Selection Index to determine which students qualify as Commended Students and Semifinalists. In general, students who score in thetop 3-4%are named Commended Scholars, while students who score in the top 1% are deemed Semifinalists. Students are compared on astate-by-state basis. The NMSC's Selection Index ranges from 48 to 228 and is based on PSAT section scores. There are three PSAT section scores (one each for Math, Reading, and Writing and Language). Each section score ranges from 8 to 38. To calculate your Selection Index, you simplyadd your three PSAT section scores together and then multiply the sum by 2. Let's say you got 28 on Reading, 32 on Writing and Language, and 34 on Math. To find your Selection Index score, first add your section scores together: 28 + 32 + 34 = 94. Then, multiply the sum by 2 (94 * 2 = 188). This gives you a Selection Index score of 188. As you'll see in the chart below, a 188 Selection Index score isn't high enough toqualify for National Merit Semifinalist status. Instead, you'll need a Selection Index of 212 or higher, depending on where you take the test. Based on reports from individuals around the country, we've put together a comprehensive list of qualifying PSAT Selection Index scores. Check out the most recent state cutoffs for National Merit Semifinalist in the chart below. These were used to pick out Semifinalists from the October 2017 administration of the PSAT. March: Scholarship Winners Announced Finally, 7,500 of the finalists learn that they are National Merit Scholarship winners. How Do You Get the PSAT Score You Need to Become a National Merit Semifinalist? Alright, so you’re going to need an amazing score on the PSAT in order to meet the National Merit Semifinalist cutoff. Getting that score can be tough, but follow these three tips as you prepare in order to get your best PSAT score. #1: Take Practice Tests Doing well on the PSAT is all about preparation. Studying the content and format of the test is the best way to bring your score up. Some people are natural test takers, while others stress under pressure. Regardless of how you react to timed tests, preparing with high quality, relevant materials is the best way to position yourself toward top scores. Since the College Board makes the PSAT, its online practice questions are a great place to start. Below are two official practice PSATs you can use for free. You can also find more free and official PSAT practice tests in our guide. Official PSAT Practice Test 1 - Score Your Test - Answer Explanations Official PSAT Practice Test 2 - Score Your Test - Answer Explanations Take these practice tests under typical test conditions:work in a quiet area with few distractions and time yourself in accordance with official PSAT time limits. Taking timed tests is a skill, and practicing this skill will help you get better and better at the PSAT. Understanding the format of the test will also help you eliminate the potential for careless errors. #2: Identify and Strengthen Your Weak Areas It’s not enough, however, to take just one practice test and then immediately move on to the next one.As you’re studying and answering practice problems, try to identify your weaknesses. Are there any patterns in your mistakes? Do you need more practice with Reading questions? Grammar? Vocabulary? Algebra? Probability? Figure out where you need to focus your attention to really strengthen your overall PSAT score. At the same, you might also be able to push up your overall score by playing to your strengths. The NMSC considers your composite score rather than your individual section scores. For example, if you scored 650 on the Math section of a practice test, it might be easy for you to push that up to 750+. Or if you’re stronger at Reading and Writing, you might be able to add more points to your composite score by focusing your energies on those two sections. Just remember that, ultimately, you can’t have any low section scores on the PSAT if you want to become a National Merit Finalist. So try to staystrong across all areas of the test! #3: Set Goals and Track Your Progress Becoming a National Merit Semifinalist is a lofty goal, and in order to make sure you’re on track to meet it, you need to know early on what PSAT to aim for and how much progress you should be making. First, use the above chart to figure out what the cutoff is for your state. You might want to add a point or two just to be safe and take into account any potential increases in the cutoff score. Once you have your overall PSAT goal score, set smaller goals to accomplish throughout your studying. These can be monthly or weekly goals depending on what works best for your schedule. Some ideas could beto try to develop a better understanding of algebra questions by the end of the week, or to try to raise your total PSAT score 20 points by the end of the month. No matter your goals, regularly check to see that you’re (on your way to) meeting them. If not, figure out what you can do to improve, such as studying more often or changing up your study methods. Setting regular goals will not only help you stay motivated but will also ensure that you’re making the progress you need to be making to get the score you want on test day. How to Stay Motivated for the PSAT In addition to planning how you'll prep for the PSAT, you should ask yourself another important question: how will you stay motivated?Staying motivated is key to sustaining your studying. Why do you want to do well on the PSAT? What drives you?
